Communicable Disease unit is committed to developing novel antibiotics for tuberculosis and build on the success of bedaquiline, a groundbreaking drug developed by Janssen for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death from a single pathogen and the biggest contributor to AMR-related death. At Communicable Disease we face tuberculosis pandemia from multiple angles by trying to develop new technologies that would benefit patients compliance and would help to achieve a simpler, shorter and safer treatment for MDR-TB patients. This position is linked with a VLAIO O&O project that will explore de discovery and characterization of fix dose combinations (FDC) for MDR-TB treatment. The work will be performed together with the University of Leuven (KUL) where they will explore new potential strategies for FDC. We are looking for a highly motivated and innovative scientist, who will take ownership in our Discovery-Translational team in Beerse, Belgium. The Associate Scientist will mainly develop, conduct and manage in vitro assays/models with M. tuberculosis to evaluate the efficacy of new anti-tuberculosis compounds, alone and in combination. They will also assist with the various M. tuberculosis molecular biology needs of the project. All this is done in a team-oriented, result driven, international research environment that provides an excellent career opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Scientist. Job Responsibilities: * Develop, optimize, validate and perform in vitro M. tuberculosis microbiological assays. * Perform and report in vitro M. tuberculosis kill kinetic assays, MIC and synergy assays. * Manage, conduct and report in vivo efficacy and PK studies of the fix dose combinations. * Maintenance of bacterial and compound stocks. * Establish an understanding of the relevance of the data being generated on the project. * Present own work confidently, internally and with the project partners, with clear rationale and produce slides on own work. * Write up lab book to department and patent-acceptable standard. * Use appropriate scientific literature to plan assays. * Maintain awareness of the relevant scientific literature and contemporary laboratory practices. The following are minimum requirements related to the Associate Scientist position. * MSc in a relevant Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry or related; with at least 3 years of experience in industry setting or equivalent. * Experienced in different microbiology techniques, such us culture, stocks mainteinance, molecular techniques and compound efficacy assessment. Work experience with mycobacteria would be a plus. * Experience working in a Biosafety level 3 is preferred. * Lab experience working with mice and having the corresponding accreditation (FELASA B). * Proficient in English. * Proficient in MS Office and Graphpad Prism. * Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret data and reporting the results. * Demonstration of robust oral and written communication skills. Shown ability to collaborate, empathize with team members of different backgrounds required. * Ability to work well in a quick paced, dynamic and interactive environment is vital. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work under pressure.
